Registered nurses (RN) may specialize in any one of countless disciplines from forensic nursing to neonatal nursing. These specialized fields are where a higher degree of expertise, training and certification is preferred over that of an LPN or CNA. In many cases, registered nurses are expected to oversee the performance & duties of LPNs and CNAs.
Registered nurse jobs are usually located in hospitals, private practice offices, schools, and residential care facilities. If you are seeking a job in registered nursing, be sure that you have passed the NCLEX-RN beforehand not only for the competitive edge but also to save yourself the pressure of studying for the exam while trying to succeed in your new job.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook 2008-09 ed., "employment of registered nurses is expected to grow 23 percent from 2006 to 2016, much faster than the average for all occupations."
