JOB SUMMARY
The Medical Technologist is responsible to the Within-The-Team Leader and/or Department Co-Leaders.  He/she works in a laboratory team committed to a common purpose and goals.  The Medical Technologist works within the scope of Laboratory policies and procedures to provide specimen processing, test performance and reporting of results. The Medical Technologist performs testing procedures that are authorized by the laboratory medical director with the degree of skill commensurate with the individual's education, training, experience and technical abilities.  He/she exercises professional judgment in evaluation, specimen integrity, result accuracy and inter-result validity and takes corrective action as necessary.  He/she maintains records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens and that all quality control, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance procedures are performed.  The Medical Technologist demonstrates the capability to identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either corrects the problems or notifies the supervisor, technical specialist or Pathologist designated for that area of practice.  His/her functions also include handling telephone inquiries and computer communications between the laboratory and the client areas.  He/she assists with specimen processing and the functions of the laboratory support staff when needed.  He/she supports inventory monitoring, ordering of supplies and acquisition of items from central supply or the laboratory storeroom. The Medical Technologist is responsible to practice within the scope of their duties and licensure in accordance with approved policies, procedures and protocols.  He/she also follows all safety practices and maintains competency with skills to ensure high quality testing services.  The Medical Technologist contributes to positive outcomes and meets the vision and cultural expectations of the organization by exhibiting professional behavior and laboratory expertise.  He/she must identify opportunities for and contribute to the improvement of quality, safety and cost, as well as patient, customer, and employee satisfaction.  May perform other duties as assigned.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS
(These are minimum qualifications for employment in this position.)
1. Education: Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or equivalent with approved clinical laboratory internship. (Refer to Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CLIA '88) Standards and State of Florida qualifications for licensure)
2. Licensure: Maintains an active status for licensure under the rules of the Board of Clinical Laboratory Personnel (Division of Medical Quality Assurance) for the disciplines of practice that are performed. Maintains required continuing education credits to maintain licensure.
3. Experience: Two years experience as a Medical Technologist preferred. Entry level Technologist must document competency on required skills prior to working independently. (If STEP or PTD and normally scheduled to work less than 40 hours per pay period, must have minimum of one year full time experience in acute care hospital.)
4. Skills: Knowledge of chemical, biological and mathematical principles, and of laboratory instrumentation, method principles and techniques. Good interpersonal skills needed for interactions with patients, families, caregivers, physicians and other health care team members.
