Education:   Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). 

Experience:  Two years experience as an office nurse, preferably in Cardiology or related area.  Highly desired, but not required, previous experience with dysrhythmia and pacemaker management and follow-up. 

Other Requirements: CPR certification within three months of employment.

Responsibilities:

  • Interprets pacemaker, internal defibrillator and rhythm strips. Analyzes patient's rhythm strip; interprets magnet behavior; identifies potential emergent problems; and evaluates pacemaker function. Edits and records findings. Notifies physicians.
  • Applies 24-hour Holter monitor, King of Hearts & CardioMemo.  Prepares patient and equipment for procedure.  Explains and instructs the patient. Receives and interprets trans- missions.  Places and removes monitors. Generates and records reports. Ensures physician informed of abnormalities.
  • Re-programs pacemakers and internal defibrillators. Performs threshold checks. Programs pacing intervals, mode, sensitivity, output, and refractory settings. Identifies any rhythm problems, and reprograms to correct. Makes recommendations to physicians ensure normal device function
  • Provides patient education needs. Determines patient's level of insight and provides necessary education, to include family support members. Orients on post-implant care, immediate and long term care. Advises on after-hours telephonic service. Explains devices.
  • Assists as necessary in proper functioning of Pacer Clinic.  Maintains rooms, supplies, equipment and files in properly order at all times. Operates computer based registry and performs follow-up activities. Recognizes and responds appropriately to emergency situations. Maintains CPR.
