Job Description
The Director of Pharmacy (DOP) maintains and coordinates systems to ensure that pharmacy operations run efficiently on a day-to-day basis.  This position ensures appropriate pharmaceutical care is administered to patients of the hospital.  The DOP supervises professional, technical, and clerical pharmacy personnel involved in pharmacy operations.  They must also analyze systems and operations of the department via quality control measures in order to identify and rectify problems.  The Director of Pharmacy coordinates all facets of operations within the department.  In addition, they must perform the duties of a staff pharmacist, as required.
Job Requirements

This position requires graduation from an accredited College of Pharmacy, and an advanced degree in a related field and/or completion of an accredited hospital pharmacy residency is preferred.  A minimum of three (3) years of hospital experience is desired with one (1) year in a managerial role preferred, and the DOP must maintain a current license in the state of practice.  This position requires strong decision-making skills.  Independent decisions and actions are required, as well as participation in-group decision-making.  The DOP must be available to work during the hours of operation of the Pharmacy.  The DOP may provide on-call coverage after hours or at times other than scheduled shifts.  The DOP must be able to read and interpret physician orders.  In addition, they must be able to manipulate pharmaceuticals in preparation for dispensing and operate equipment necessary for compounding, preparing, labeling, and dispensing drugs.  The DOP must possess the capability to document activities, interventions, and processes.  In addition, they must communicate drug-related information to patients, physicians, nurses and other hospital staff verbally and in writing.  Must be able to obtain drugs from storage areas between floor level and approximately six feet above floor level, independently transport medications, carts, orders, and other items (weighing up to 40 pounds) to various areas of the hospital.  Must travel to “Code Blue” situations and assist when necessary.  Must have the capability to handle controlled substances.  May operate/maintain various machines, including typewriter, laminar flow hood, personal computer, compounding devices, telephone, and infusion devices.  Standing or walking is required most of the shift.
